His pattern consisted of a checkerboard of beige and chestnut and the inscription "Louis Vuitton, marque deposee". Though he listed that it was a Vuitton product, it was still counterfeit. This design was enough to earn the Louis Vuitton company a gold medal at the Paris World Fair in 1889.

Vuitton was booming in sales, despite the counterfeit copies. Though he was doing well in business, his personal life was certainly not at a halt. In 1880, his son Georges married Josephine Patrelle. On their wedding day, Louis gave over control of the Rue Scribe store to Georges. Only 3 years later, Louis became a grandfather as Georges' son Gaston-Louis Vuitton was born.
