The medium coeli, or mid-heaven, is that point on the ecliptic that is furthest above the plane of the horizon; its opposite point is known as the imum coeli. The houses are a series of twelve intervals on the plane of the ecliptic. Astrologers have devised at least nine different ways of calculating the positions of those houses.
