In many "traditional" societies, courtship is a highly structured activity, with well-known rules. In many societies, courtship is reduced to a minimum, or eliminated altogether, by the practice of arranged marriages, where a partner is chosen for you, typically by your parents. In some societies, the parents or community choose potential partners, and then allow limited dating to determine whether the parties are suited.

Online dating or you may say internet dating is very famous these days and becoming more and more popular because of its convenience and advantages. The first and foremost advantage from dating online is that you can contact matches without revealing your real identity avoiding the embarrassment if doesn't work out. You may meet the people you would otherwise never get the chance to encounter.

On the net, you can sift through profiles of singles looking for the type of person you'd like to get to know, without the disadvantages of having to make that first impression count too much. And you can do so from the comfort of your bed, wearing whatever you want and so forth. Oh, and these are singles who are actually looking. There's none of that harsh rejection you might experience in a nightclub or bar. It isn't a place for losers either. Take a breeze through some of the profiles on a large dating site and you'll be suprised at the sheer variety of people who are actively looking. From Lawyer's to lumberjacks, everybody seems represented.

As a person develops their relationship with a loved one over time, the relative strengths of the elements tends to change. Generally love will start off strong in passion but weak in the other elements. However as time passes, the other elements may grow and passion may shrink -- this depends upon the individual. So what starts as Infatuation or Empty love may well develop into one of the fuller types of love. Likewise when a person has known a loved one for a long time, passion may fade, changing love from Consummate to Companionate, or from Romantic love to Liking. Note that the feeling which Sternberg terms passion is similar to, if not the same as, that termed limerence by Dorothy Tennov. Sternberg states that a relationship based on a single element is less likely to survive than one based on two or more.

Courtship is the process of selecting and attracting a mate for marriage or (in more liberal societies) a short-term sexual relationship.
