On the net, you can sift through profiles of singles looking for the type of person you'd like to get to know, without the disadvantages of having to make that first impression count too much. And you can do so from the comfort of your bed, wearing whatever you want and so forth. Oh, and these are singles who are actually looking. There's none of that harsh rejection you might experience in a nightclub or bar. It isn't a place for losers either. Take a breeze through some of the profiles on a large dating site and you'll be suprised at the sheer variety of people who are actively looking. From Lawyer's to lumberjacks, everybody seems represented.

In many "traditional" societies, courtship is a highly structured activity, with well-known rules. In many societies, courtship is reduced to a minimum, or eliminated altogether, by the practice of arranged marriages, where a partner is chosen for you, typically by your parents. In some societies, the parents or community choose potential partners, and then allow limited dating to determine whether the parties are suited.

In an attempt to explain the commonalities and differences of the many types of love, Robert Sternberg has suggested a view of love involving three elements: intimacy, passion and commitment. Different stages and types of love can be explained as different combinations of the three elements. The combinations are as follows.

In liberal Western societies, a date is an occasion when one socializes with a potential lover or future spouse. In this sense, the purpose of a date is for the people dating to get to know each other and decide whether they want to have a relationship. However, the term is also used to mean a social evening between people who have an established relationship, particularly if the goal is to relax away from day-to-day responsibilities, such as caring for children. Dating may be the term for the relationship of two people attending a date, but other terms are often used. These terms imply different degress of commitment and monogamy, in mid-20th century America teenagers commonly dated or "went out" (on dates, "going out") with multiple people before "going steady" with just one, but "going out" now generally implies monogamy.

Some languages, such as ancient Greek, are better than the English at distinguishing between the different senses in which the word love is used. For example, ancient Greek has the words philia, eros, agape, and storge, meaning love between friends, romantic/sexual love, unconditional (possibly sacrificial, unreciprocated) love, and affection/familial love respectively. However, with Greek as with many other languages, it has been historically difficult to separate the meanings of these words totally, and so we can find examples of agape being used with much the same meaning as eros. At the same time the ancient Greek text of the Bible has examples of the verb agapo being used with the same meaning as phileo.
