Courtship is the process of selecting and attracting a mate for marriage or (in more liberal societies) a short-term sexual relationship.

On the net, you can sift through profiles of singles looking for the type of person you'd like to get to know, without the disadvantages of having to make that first impression count too much. And you can do so from the comfort of your bed, wearing whatever you want and so forth. Oh, and these are singles who are actually looking. There's none of that harsh rejection you might experience in a nightclub or bar. It isn't a place for losers either. Take a breeze through some of the profiles on a large dating site and you'll be suprised at the sheer variety of people who are actively looking. From Lawyer's to lumberjacks, everybody seems represented.

As a person develops their relationship with a loved one over time, the relative strengths of the elements tends to change. Generally love will start off strong in passion but weak in the other elements. However as time passes, the other elements may grow and passion may shrink -- this depends upon the individual. So what starts as Infatuation or Empty love may well develop into one of the fuller types of love. Likewise when a person has known a loved one for a long time, passion may fade, changing love from Consummate to Companionate, or from Romantic love to Liking. Note that the feeling which Sternberg terms passion is similar to, if not the same as, that termed limerence by Dorothy Tennov. Sternberg states that a relationship based on a single element is less likely to survive than one based on two or more.

In an attempt to explain the commonalities and differences of the many types of love, Robert Sternberg has suggested a view of love involving three elements: intimacy, passion and commitment. Different stages and types of love can be explained as different combinations of the three elements. The combinations are as follows.

Dating online allows you to learn about person's qualities and attributes through the conversation. Since you are not seeing each other, it gives the chance to both of you to reveal the thoughts and feelings without feeling awkward or embarrassed. When you go to singles bars you really do have to scrub up, don that expensive suit, and make an impression before any words come out of your mouth. Then you have to keep that person's interest with your witty repertoire of one-liner's. It's hard ain't it?
